Whether you wake up with them or have them all the time, puffy eyes are a sign that lymphatic fluids are not draining sufficiently from the tissues. There are some simple things you can do to alleviate the puffiness. ***Cucumbers, for one. Yes, it's not just a spa thing. Cucumbers are a diuretic, so while you sit back with two peeled cucumber slices over closed eyes for a half hour (no make-up, please), munch on the rest of it to help stimulate drainage from the inside. ***For more immediate relief, try these simple eye exercises in the order given below. Eye movements not only "pump" the fluid out of the tissues by contracting the muscles, they also help properly support the eye for better vision. 1. Squeeze your eyes shut tightly for 3 seconds. 2. Open them as wide as you can for 2 seconds. 3. Blink your eyes rapidly for 3 seconds. 4. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 two more times. (Isn't it interesting how you hold your breath when you do this? Make sure you keep breathing during all these exercises.) 5. Keeping your head still, stretch your eyes as far up as you can, like looking at the ceiling above you. Then way down, then to the far right, then to the far left. (Keep your head still.) Repeat these eye moves a couple more times, remembering to breathe. 6. With your eyes closed to rest them, reach up and lightly pinch all around your cheeks with your fingertips -- under the eyes, next to the nose, next to the mouth and toward the ear -- for a few seconds. This helps open the drainage channels. 7. Give this procedure a few minutes to take effect. Repeat if you need more drainage. Also, you need to know that, if your body is "hoarding" water in tissues, it may be because of too high a sodium content in your diet or not enough hydration, i.e., water intake.
