Placebo Studies and Holistic Health

The apparent healing effects of placebos were researched extensively in the 1970s and '80s, along with an investigation into alternative and holistic healing modalities.

Thousands of cases were studied, and participants were divided into three groups: People receiving

1. Traditional medical modalities (medications and surgery),

2. Alternative/complementary therapies, and

3. Placebos, those little white sugar pills.

The study was structured around the theme of, Which healing modality yields the most cures?

"Cure" is defined in traditional medicine as no return of symptoms within seven years. So, this was a longitudinal research study encompassing tens of thousands of cases.

The results were surprising -- about a third of the people studied were "cured" by the traditional medical approaches. A third were "cured" who had used alternatives. And a third were "cured" who took the placebos!!!

The reason I am including the results of the famous placebo studies in this article in relation to our healing affinities is because I believe they point directly to the fact that some people are

+ Physical Affinity self-healers (traditional medical model, based on chemistry and surgery), some are

+ Mental Affinity self-healers (alternative therapies based on plant sources, and the power of visualization), and some people are

+ Spiritual Affinity self-healers (healing through faith and alternatives such as homeopathy and energy healing).

Many researchers concluded, as a result of the placebo studies, that belief or faith has a healing power of its own. I agree with this but it doesn't go far enough ... it does indicate that there are a host of healing modalities more suited to a person with this affinity, and also that this type of self-healer does best in healing and in keeping him/herself healthy by having a strong spiritual component in his/her daily life.

Many of the alternative therapies available have appeal for the mental self-healer, but there is a dividing line between the mental and spiritual healing agents that guide the selection of the most beneficial therapies for an individual.

Another revelation from this study is the role of our current medical model, based in chemistry -- it really best serves about a third of the population.

Another huge study done in the early 1990s showed that about a third of people in the U.S. had already tried an alternative/complementary therapy. The good thing about this is that medical schools across the country began including classes on alternatives therapies so that the new doctors would be able to understand what else their patients were doing.

The bad thing about this aspect of the study was the alarm bell that rang throughout the AMA and the pharmaceutical industry. Since then, they have been trying almost yearly to gain control -- and suppression -- of natural, inexpensive, unpatentable therapies through legislation and support of research negating the effects of prayer and some alternative therapies (chiropractic, energy medicines, vitamins and massage, for example).

Fortunately, the public outcry has not allowed this to happen, but the medical/pharmaceutical alliance keeps trying through legislative bills to gain more control of our choices.

I personally believe that the placebo studies point to the health care wave of the future, where people will be using practices and therapies in harmony with their affinities, and that 2/3 of them will be mental and spiritual options, rather than only the physical, on which the current medical model is based. We shall see.
